Pelvic floor concerns can affect much more than bladder control. Pelvic pain, bowel difficulties, low back or hip pain, discomfort with intimacy, pregnancy-related changes, and other symptoms can all be connected to how the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles are functioning.
At Complete PT, pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized area of care provided by physical therapists who have pursued additional pelvic health training. Members of our pelvic floor team have completed specialized training through Herman & Wallace, a pelvic rehabilitation education provider.
What Is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?
Pelvic floor physical therapy focuses on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue that support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. When these muscles are too tight, too weak, or not coordinating well, you may notice pain, leakage, or pressure. Pelvic health physical therapy uses hands-on techniques, targeted exercises, and education to restore normal function.

Specialized, One-on-One Pelvic Health Care
Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized field, and proper treatment requires additional education and training. Our pelvic health therapists have completed advanced pelvic rehabilitation training through Herman & Wallace to better understand and treat the complex relationship between the pelvic floor, hips, spine, abdominal muscles, bladder and bowel function, and nervous system.
At Complete PT, you work directly with a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy in a private, one-on-one setting. We take time to listen to your concerns, explain what we are finding, and make sure you understand your treatment options.
We also recognize that physical therapy may be only one part of your overall care. If symptoms suggest that additional medical evaluation may be helpful, we may communicate with your doctor when appropriate or encourage you to follow up with your healthcare provider. Our goal is to help make sure you are getting comprehensive care, not simply addressing one symptom in isolation.
What Does a Pelvic Floor Evaluation Include?
Your first visit begins with a conversation about your symptoms, medical history, daily activities, and goals.
Your therapist may assess posture, breathing, core function, hip and low back mobility, strength, flexibility, and external pelvic structures. Depending on your symptoms, an internal pelvic floor assessment may also be recommended.
An internal assessment can provide valuable information about pelvic floor muscle strength, tension, tenderness, and coordination. However, an internal assessment is 100% optional.
Your therapist will explain what the assessment involves and why it may be helpful before proceeding. You can ask questions, decline the assessment, or stop at any time. If you choose not to have an internal assessment, your therapist can still gather useful information through external evaluation and other testing methods.
